A white silica sand sea in the Chihuahuan desert - rolling dunes south of Ciudad Juarez, protected for their rare plants and their startling brightness.

The Medanos de Samalayuca are an anomaly in the northern desert: a field of pale, almost white dunes covering a broad basin of quartz sand, rising into ridges and bowls that shift with the wind and reflect light hard enough to hurt at midday. Protected as a flora and fauna area, the dunes shelter a specialized plant and animal community adapted to loose sand - among them endemic and rare species that make the reserve scientifically important, alongside kangaroo rats, lizards and the tracks of nocturnal life written across the slopes each morning. For visitors the appeal is simpler: climbing dunes barefoot, sledding down them, photographing the ridge lines at dawn and dusk when the sand turns gold and every ripple casts a shadow, and standing in a landscape of nothing but sky and sand an hour from a border metropolis. Sand buggies and off-road vehicles use parts of the field, which the reserve regulates; the quiet zones away from the tracks are where the dunes are worth walking.
What you actually see
- The dune ridges - pale silica sand in rolling waves.
- The dawn and dusk light - long shadows across the ripples.
- The desert life - tracks, lizards and specialist plants.
- The sledding slopes - the informal local sport.
When to go
October to April to avoid extreme heat; go at first or last light, both for temperature and for the way the dunes photograph. Wind can whip up sand at any hour.
Honest expectations
There is no shade, no water and no facilities at the open access points - carry everything. Sand gets into everything, including cameras. Off-road traffic can be noisy in the popular sections; walk further for quiet.
Nearby
Ciudad Juarez lies north at the border; Villa Ahumada and the highway south run toward Chihuahua city.
