Puente de Dios

Puente de Dios is the Huasteca at its most theatrical. From the community entrance at Tamasopo, a long stairway drops through subtropical forest to the Agua Buena river, where a natural rock bridge - the "bridge of God" - spans the water and, behind it, the river disappears into a semi-flooded cavern. Swimmers in life jackets follow a rope and wooden walkway from the pools outside into the half-dark, and there the trick happens: light entering through submerged openings turns the water an unearthly, luminous turquoise-blue, so that the cave seems lit from below while stalactites hang in the gloom above. Bats stir; voices echo; the temperature drops. Outside the cave, the river's terraces make swimming pools and small falls in the open sun, with ledges to jump from, hammocks and comedores for the recovery. The site is community-run and orderly - jackets are compulsory, the walkway is one-way at busy times - and the return is that stairway, which everyone underestimates on the way down.

When to go

November to May for clear blue water; midday sun deepens the cave's glow. After heavy rain the river runs high and the cave may close.

Honest expectations

Life jackets are mandatory and the cave entry can queue at peak hours. The stairs are steep and long in humid heat. Cash only, and phone signal is scarce.
