Polyforum Siqueiros

David Alfaro Siqueiros went bigger than any muralist before or since: the Polyforum Cultural Siqueiros, opened in 1971 beside what is now the World Trade Center, is a twelve-sided jewel-box building whose entire exterior and interior serve as canvas for The March of Humanity in Latin America - at roughly 8,000 square metres, commonly cited as the largest mural work in the world. Outside, twelve angled panels blaze with sculpted-relief figures in Siqueiros's late style, part painting, part metal sculpture, part architecture. Inside, the elliptical Forum Universal surrounds the visitor completely: humanity marches from oppression toward the future across walls and ceiling in violent foreshortening, with the artist's "sculpture-painting" technique throwing limbs and flames off the surface. Weekend light-and-sound shows rotate the audience on a moving platform beneath the spectacle, narrated in Siqueiros's own recorded voice. It is muralism's maximalist endpoint - overwhelming by design, and unlike anything else in the city.

Honest expectations

Restoration work has periodically limited access to parts of the building - check current status before a special trip. The aesthetic is intense and politically charged; it divides visitors by temperament. English interpretation is limited.
