Parque Museo La Venta

When oil drilling threatened the original La Venta site in the 1950s, poet-anthropologist Carlos Pellicer engineered one of museology's great rescues: he moved the monuments - colossal heads, altars, stelae, tonnage by the dozen - to a lakeside jungle park in Villahermosa and set them along shaded paths as if the forest had grown around them. The result remains the best place on earth to meet the Olmec, Mesoamerica's mother culture, at eye level. Three of the famous colossal heads - multi-tonne basalt portraits in helmets, lips and gazes individual enough to be persons - anchor a circuit of some thirty monuments: the "altar" thrones with rulers emerging from cave-mouths clutching infants, the mosaic jaguar masks, stelae of meetings and monsters, all carved from stone hauled without wheels from quarries far away, a millennium before the Maya florescence. The park doubles as urban wild space - coatis beg shamelessly, agoutis cross the paths, and howler monkeys sometimes audit from the canopy - with the lagoon glittering through the trees.

When to go

Dry-season mornings before the heat closes in - Tabasco humidity is serious; the shaded circuit helps but does not absolve middays. Open daily, 8:00 to 17:00.

Honest expectations

Interpretation is adequate rather than lavish - reading up on the Olmec beforehand doubles the encounter. The park's zoo section has aged unevenly. Mosquitoes hold season tickets; repellent is entry kit.
