Palacio Postal

The Postal Palace is what happens when a country decides its mail deserves a cathedral. Adamo Boari - the same Italian architect who began Bellas Artes across the street - finished it in 1907 as a Porfirian showpiece mixing Venetian Gothic, plateresque and art nouveau, with a steel skeleton shipped from abroad and a skin of golden Chiluca stone. The interior is the astonishment: a double grand staircase of bronze cast in Florence, splitting and recrossing beneath a glass ceiling, surrounded by four floors of gilded balustrades, brass elevators and marble counters where clerks still weigh parcels. Restored meticulously after the 1985 earthquake, it remains a working post office, which is its charm - you wander among gold under office lighting, buy a stamp, and drop a postcard into a century-old bronze slot. A small postal museum upstairs keeps uniforms, mail coaches and the history of a service that once ran by mule and rail.

Weekday business hours give full access; late afternoon light sets the stone glowing. It is an all-weather, half-hour stop - easy to pair with Bellas Artes opposite.

Honest expectations

It is one grand room plus balconies - spectacular but brief. Upper floors are sometimes restricted to postal staff, and weekend hours are shorter. Tripods draw security attention in a working office.
