Lagunas de Zempoala

The Lagunas de Zempoala National Park protects a string of glacially cold lakes cupped in fir and pine forest at about 2,800 metres on the Ajusco-Chichinautzin range - the green wall between the capital and Cuernavaca. The name means "place of twenty waters" in Nahuatl, though the park counts seven lagoons, of which three hold water year-round; Zempoala itself, the largest and first reached, does the postcard work with rowboats for hire, horses ambling the shore and trout and quesadilla stands under the trees. Beyond the busy first shore, trails climb through old-growth oyamel and cedar to the quieter Compila and Tonatiahua lakes, where the mist moves through the firs and the only noise is woodpeckers. The forest is genuinely alpine - cold mornings, afternoon cloud - and part of the biological corridor that keeps the capital's south breathing. Weekends run to family picnics and football on the meadows; midweek the lakes return to the herons.

When to go

Dry-season mornings, November to April, before the cloud builds; summer greens the meadows but rains reliably after noon. Weekdays are near-solitary.

Honest expectations

It is a simple country park - rustic facilities, cash-only stands, cold water not meant for swimming. The altitude chills fast when the sun goes; bring a layer even in spring. Stick to marked trails when mist closes in.

Tepoztlan's crag and market lie east, Cuernavaca's gardens downhill south, and the Tres Marias quesadilla strip guards the highway junction.
