La Escobilla

La Escobilla is one of the most important olive ridley nesting beaches on earth. Several times a year - most reliably from late summer into December, often on the nights around a new moon - the sea in front of this unremarkable strip of Oaxacan sand fills with turtles, and the arribada begins: an "arrival" in which tens of thousands of females haul out over a few nights, digging, laying and covering in a slow-motion traffic jam of shells, flippers and flying sand that continues until dawn. The beach's status is federal sanctuary, which is why almost nobody photographs it casually: access to the nesting zone is controlled, patrolled against poaching, and opened only through authorized guides and the region's turtle-conservation programs, which run limited escorted visits and release events for hatchlings. That restraint is the reason there is anything to see. Mexico's ridleys were hunted to the edge in the twentieth century - a slaughterhouse operated on this coast until 1990 - and the recovery here is one of the country's genuine conservation wins.

When to go

July to December, with the great arrivals clustering around new moons in autumn; ask the turtle centres at Mazunte or local operators which nights look likely - nobody can promise a date.

Honest expectations

This is a restricted sanctuary, not a beach day: go through authorized guides, follow every instruction, use no white light or flash, and never touch or block a turtle. Arribadas cannot be scheduled - some visits find an empty beach.
