Kiosco Morisco

The Kiosco Morisco began life representing Mexico at the 1884-85 New Orleans world's fair - an octagonal pavilion of cast iron worked into Moorish arches, painted in oxide red, cream and gold, crowned with a glass dome and a bronze eagle. After touring fair duty it came home, stood briefly in the Alameda Central, and in 1910 was rebuilt in the middle of Santa Maria la Ribera's own alameda, where it has anchored neighborhood life ever since. The barrio around it is one of the city's quiet pleasures: a Porfirian grid of faded mansions, old-school cantinas, and the Geology Museum's art nouveau palace facing the square, its iron staircase and fossil halls unchanged in a century. On weekends the kiosk hosts danzon afternoons - couples in their Sunday best turning slow figures under the dome - while families circle with esquites and balloon vendors work the paths. It is the capital at its most gently time-warped.

It is one exquisite pavilion and a pleasant square - an hour's detour, best combined with the Geology Museum and a cantina lunch. The surrounding barrio is a working residential quarter, where restored mansions stand beside others still waiting their turn.
