Creel

Creel is the practical capital of Copper Canyon tourism: a small town at 2,300 metres in the Sierra Tarahumara, built along the railway in wood and stone, with pine forest at the end of every street and the Chepe train pulling in daily to a platform lined with Rarámuri women selling pine-needle baskets and carved figures. It is a base rather than a destination, and the excursions justify it. Short trips reach the Valle de los Monjes and the Valle de las Ranas, where erosion has left standing rock columns and boulder shapes across meadows; the Cusarare waterfall and its Jesuit mission church; the hot springs of Recowata down a rough canyon road; and the lakes of Arareko, ringed by pine and open to boats and horses. Longer runs go to the Divisadero rim, the Basaseachi fall and the long descent to Batopilas. Creel's own museums cover Rarámuri culture and mission history, and the town's cheap lodging and tour agencies make it the natural hub for anyone travelling the sierra without a car.

April to October for accessible roads and warm days; winter brings snow, freezing nights and a different kind of beauty. The rail schedule shapes most itineraries.

Honest expectations

Creel itself is plain - the sierra around it is the attraction. Excursion quality varies with the guide; ask what is included. Nights are cold at altitude even in summer, and rural roads are rough.
