Ilot Mtsamboro

Off Mayotte's northwest corner, Ilot Mtsamboro rises green and unhurried - the lagoon's biggest islet, famous across the island for one crop: the Mtsamboro oranges whose season sweetens mid-year markets, grown in orchards that families from the facing village tend by boat commute. Day trips land on coves of coral sand, snorkel the clear margins, and - in season, with the growers' blessing and a few coins - taste the oranges at their source. The islet's saddle walk climbs through orchard and forest for lagoon views, and the return crossing often collects sunset over the reef as a bonus.
