Trou d'Argent

Trou d'Argent is a short crescent of sand on the eastern side of Rodrigues, closed at both ends by rock walls so that the cove sits in its own enclosure with a channel of clear water running in from the lagoon. It is reached only on foot, on the coastal path that runs south from Graviers past Saint Francois, an hour or so of walking over headlands and along other empty beaches, which is why it is usually deserted even by Rodrigues standards. There are no facilities of any kind, no shade beyond the cliff at certain hours, and no road access. The path continues south past further coves toward Baie Malgache, making a longer day walk for those who want it.

When to go

May to December for the walking weather; the path is exposed and hot in summer. Check the tide, since the cove is small at high water. Start early and carry water.

Honest expectations

There is no road, no shade, no water and no facilities; everything must be carried. The walk takes about an hour each way over rough ground. The cove is small and disappears at high tide. Currents in the channel can be strong.
