Gris Gris

The coral reef that encircles most of Mauritius is absent along this part of the south coast, and the difference is immediate: instead of a flat turquoise lagoon there is open ocean running straight into cliffs, with heavy swell breaking on black basalt and a wind that blows almost constantly. A grass headland above the cliffs at Gris Gris gives the view along the coast, with a path down to a beach where swimming is prohibited because of the current. A short walk east leads to La Roche qui Pleure, the weeping rock, a formation that from the right angle resembles a crying face with water running down it. The name Gris Gris is often linked to a term for sorcery, though the origin is uncertain.

When to go

May to December for the clearer weather, though the swell is often biggest in the southern winter, which makes the sea more dramatic. It is windy year round. Late afternoon light suits the cliffs.

Practical notes

Swimming is dangerous and prohibited here. The wind is constant and strong. Vendors and informal guides work the car park. The weeping rock only reads as a face from one particular angle and disappoints from others.
