Fort Adelaide

Fort Adelaide, known locally as the Citadel, stands on a hill above central Port Louis, a squat fortification of dark basalt built by the British between 1834 and 1840 in the years after the abolition of slavery, when the authorities were nervous about unrest in the town below. It was never used in action. The ramparts give the best free view of Port Louis, looking down over the roofs and the Champ de Mars racecourse to the harbour, the cruise terminal and the mountains behind, and the courtyard inside is used for concerts and events. The walk up is steep, the fort itself is largely empty, and it takes an hour including the climb.

When to go

May to December for cooler climbing weather. Late afternoon gives the best light over the harbour. It closes in the evening, so check hours before making the climb.

Things to know

The interior is largely bare with minimal interpretation. The approach road and steps are steep and there is no shade. The area around the hill has a reputation for petty theft, so walking up alone is discouraged. Opening hours are inconsistent.
