Wied il-Mielah Window

Wied il-Mielaħ ends at the sea on Gozo's northwestern coast in a natural arch cut through the cliff by wave action, and since the collapse of the Azure Window at Dwejra in 2017 it has become the island's principal surviving sea window. It is smaller and less dramatic than its predecessor but the setting is quieter, at the end of a valley with salt pans and a boathouse below, and the walk down the wied is worth doing in itself.

What's there

• The arch - a natural rock window cut through the cliff by the sea.
• The valley walk - the wied running down to the coast from the road.
• The salt pans - rock-cut pans on the shore below the arch.
• The rock platform - the flat shelf giving the view along the coast.

When to go

April to October is most comfortable. Winter storms make the platform dangerous. Late afternoon light suits photographs of the arch.

Before you go

It is much smaller than the Azure Window was and visitors expecting that are disappointed. The rock platform is unfenced with drops. There are no facilities and parking is limited.

Gharb is inland, and Wied il-Ghasri is northeast.
