Ta' Kola Windmill

Ta' Kola was built in 1725 during the magistracy of Grand Master Manoel de Vilhena, one of a set of windmills put up to grind the islands' grain, and was rebuilt in the 1780s; it is among the few to survive with its machinery and has been a museum since 1992. The tower holds the millstones and the wooden gearing, and the rooms around the base are furnished as the miller's living quarters and workshop, with tools from the trades that supported village life. It takes its name from the last miller to work it.

When to go

Year round; it is indoors and suits any weather. The ticket is shared with Ggantija next door. Mornings are quietest.

Good to know

It is small and the visit is short, usually thirty minutes. The sails do not turn. It is normally visited as an add-on to Ggantija rather than on its own.
