Senglea

Senglea, in Maltese Isla, is a long narrow peninsula between two creeks of the Grand Harbour, fortified from 1554 and named for the Grand Master who built its walls. At the tip stands the Gardjola garden with a small stone watch turret carved with an eye and an ear, symbols of vigilance, looking straight across at Valletta. The town was very heavily bombed in the Second World War and much of what stands is postwar rebuilding.

Background

Senglea, L-Isla in Maltese, carries the title Città Invicta, the unconquered city, earned when it held out against the Ottoman forces in the Great Siege of 1565. It takes its name from Claude de la Sengle, the Grand Master who founded it. The Knights planned three towns on the land of the old settlement of Birmula, starting with Senglea, then Vittoriosa and Cospicua, and enclosed the rest within the Cottonera lines. Only 0.2 square kilometres in area, it had 2408 residents in July 2024. Locals speak the Cottonera dialect, and the town keeps its festas on 8 September and the third Sunday of June.

When to go

March to June and September to November are most comfortable. Late afternoon light on Valletta from the Gardjola is the best. Summer is hot with little shade.

Before you go

Wartime bombing destroyed most of the historic fabric and the town is largely postwar. There is little to visit beyond the garden and the basilica. Parking is very difficult.

Birgu is across the creek, and Cospicua is at the base of the peninsula.
