Dwejra Bay and Inland Sea

Dwejra on Gozo's west coast is a set of connected features: the Inland Sea, a shallow lagoon formed by a collapsed cave and joined to the open Mediterranean by a tunnel about eighty metres long through the cliff, which small boats pass through; Fungus Rock standing in the mouth of the bay; and the Blue Hole, a vertical shaft in the rock that is one of the best-known dive sites in the Mediterranean. The Azure Window arch here collapsed in a storm in 2017.

What you actually see

• The Inland Sea - a lagoon joined to the open sea by a tunnel through the cliff.
• The boat tunnel - small boats running through the eighty-metre passage.
• Fungus Rock - the isolated stack guarding the mouth of Dwejra Bay.
• The Blue Hole - a vertical rock shaft, a celebrated dive site.

When to go

April to October for boat trips and diving; the tunnel closes in rough seas. Mornings are calmest. Winter storms make the whole area inaccessible.

Honest expectations

The Azure Window collapsed in 2017 and no longer exists, which disappoints visitors who come expecting it. Boat trips through the tunnel are cancelled in any swell. The site is crowded with tour groups in season.
