Kita sits below a flat-topped sandstone mountain in western Mali, a town that grew around the railway to Kayes, and the mountain above it carries both rock paintings and a Catholic sanctuary that draws a pilgrimage of tens of thousands each November. Caves on the slope hold red painted figures of considerable age. The town is also known in Mali for its groundnut trade and for the musicians who have come out of it.

What you actually see

  • The sandstone mountain - the flat-topped massif rising above the town.
  • The rock paintings - red figures in caves on the slope.
  • The November pilgrimage - the annual gathering at the sanctuary on the mountain.
  • The railway - the line to Kayes the town grew around.

When to go

November to February is the cool dry season; the pilgrimage falls in November. March to May is extremely hot. The rains run June to September.

Honest expectations

The pilgrimage fills the town completely and accommodation vanishes. The rock paintings need a guide and are damaged in places. The railway service has been unreliable for years.

Nearby

Fort de Medine is northwest near Kayes, and Bamako is east.
