Essouk was Tadmakka, a town in a valley of the Adrar des Ifoghas that Arab geographers described from the tenth century as a place where gold coins were struck without inscriptions, standing on the caravan route between North Africa and the Niger bend. Stone house foundations, mosques and a cemetery with Arabic funerary inscriptions among the earliest in West Africa survive in the valley, with rock engravings on the cliffs above.

When to go

November to February is the cool season and the practical window. March to May is extremely hot. The site is open ground with no shade.

The site is remote and requires an expedition with local guides. Nothing is consolidated or interpreted. Reaching this part of Mali requires arrangements made well in advance.
