Royal Klang Heritage Walk

Klang was the royal and administrative capital of Selangor before Kuala Lumpur existed, and the trail links what survives of that in a walk of a couple of kilometres from the station: the Gedung Raja Abdullah, an 1856 tin warehouse built by the Bugis-descended territorial chief whose disputes helped trigger the Selangor civil war; Kota Raja Mahadi on the hill, the fort of his opponent; the Sultan Suleiman mosque of 1934 in an Art Deco-influenced style; the Alam Shah palace; the old fire station and colonial administrative buildings; and Little India along Jalan Tengku Kelana, which is the busiest Indian commercial street in the country. Klang is also where bak kut teh, the pork rib and herb soup, was created, and eating a bowl is part of the walk.

What to look for

• Gedung Raja Abdullah - the 1856 tin warehouse of the Bugis territorial chief.
• Kota Raja Mahadi - the hilltop fort of his rival from the civil war.
• The Sultan Suleiman mosque - the 1934 royal mosque in Art Deco-influenced style.
• Jalan Tengku Kelana - the country's busiest Indian shopping street.

All year; early morning before the heat. Half a day.

What to expect

Klang is a working industrial town, not a preserved centre - traffic and heat are real. Some heritage buildings are closed or in poor repair. Signage on the trail is patchy.
