Kenaboi was gazetted in 2008 over about thirteen thousand hectares in the Jelebu district of Negeri Sembilan, and it remains one of the least developed protected areas within easy reach of the Klang Valley - which is precisely its appeal and its difficulty. The forest is lowland and hill dipterocarp with rivers running through it, several waterfalls, and quartz outcrops along the ridges; scientific surveys since gazettement have turned up substantial plant and insect diversity and the mammal list includes tapir, sun bear and gaur, none of which anyone should expect to see. There are no boardwalks, no interpretation centre and very little signage: trails are rough, and a guide from the Orang Asli settlements or the forestry office is the sensible way in. Camping by the rivers is the usual arrangement.

What you actually see

  • Undeveloped forest - thirteen thousand hectares with almost no infrastructure.
  • Rivers and waterfalls - the main destinations for walks and camping.
  • Quartz outcrops - white rock along the ridge lines.
  • A serious mammal list - tapir, sun bear and gaur present, rarely seen.

When to go

All year; avoid the wettest months. Two days.

Honest expectations

There is essentially no visitor infrastructure and trails are unmarked - go with a guide. Rivers rise fast after rain. Leeches and mosquitoes are constant. Do not expect to see large mammals.

Nearby

Jelebu town is closest; Seremban and Kuala Klawang are south.
