EntryFree; boat charters and camps charged

The Mitsio islands lie some fifty kilometres north of Nosy Be and see a fraction of its traffic, mostly sailing charters and a couple of small camps. The signature feature is the Quatre Frères, four basalt columns rising sheer from the sea, and the cliffs on Grand Mitsio show the same hexagonal jointing in vertical organ-pipe formations. Around them are white beaches, reef in good condition, and villages that live on fishing. Tsarabanjina, a small island in the group, has a well-known lodge on it. Getting here means a long open crossing or a live-aboard, so most visits are part of a sailing itinerary rather than day trips, and the appeal is emptiness rather than facilities.

What you actually see

  • The Quatre Frères - four basalt columns standing out of the sea.
  • Organ-pipe cliffs - hexagonal basalt jointing on Grand Mitsio.
  • Empty beaches - white sand with no development behind it.
  • Healthy reef - snorkelling with little boat pressure.

When to go

April to November, and only with settled weather; the crossing is exposed and long. Sailing charters run through the dry season. Cyclone months stop everything.

Honest expectations

Access is the whole problem: three hours or more of open sea, and no scheduled transport. There is almost no infrastructure beyond one lodge and camps, so this is a chartered trip. Costs are high for that reason. Villages are poor and visitors arriving without a local guide are intrusive.

Nearby

Nosy Be lies south; Nosy Hara is northeast along the coast.
