Manakara

Manakara is split by the Pangalanes canal into a colonial-era quarter on the seaward side and the larger Malagasy town inland, with a long beach on the Indian Ocean that is beautiful and completely unsafe to swim in because of sharks and a heavy shore break. Its fame is the railway: the Fianarantsoa-Côte Est line, built in the 1930s, drops 1,100 metres through rainforest, tunnels and bridges over about 160 kilometres, and the journey takes anywhere from eight hours to a day and a half depending on breakdowns. It is a working freight line for coffee, banana and vanilla as much as a passenger service, and every station is a market. In town, pirogue trips run along the Pangalanes through villages, and the vanilla and coffee trade sets the rhythm.

When to go

April to November for drier travel. The train runs a few times a week and the schedule is unreliable; confirm locally rather than online. Cyclone season from January to March can cut both the railway and the roads.

Things to know

Do not swim in the sea here; sharks and currents make it genuinely dangerous and local advice is unanimous. The train is slow, crowded and frequently delayed by many hours or cancelled. The town is run-down and services are limited. Rain is frequent even in the dry season.
