Esch-sur-Sure

Esch-sur-Sûre sits inside a loop of the Sûre so tight that the river almost meets itself, leaving the village on a neck of land with water on nearly every side and a road tunnel cut through the rock to reach it. A castle begun in the tenth century stands ruined on the crag above, floodlit at night, and a watchtower on the ridge gives the standard view down onto the whole arrangement. The Upper Sûre lake begins just upstream.

Background

In Luxembourgish and German the town is called Esch-Sauer. It is a commune in the canton of Wiltz, and it was once the second smallest commune in Luxembourg by area, after Remich, until 2011, when Neunhausen and Heiderscheid joined it. The town itself lies in the north of the commune and had 415 residents as of 2025. The suffix in its name sets it apart from the city of Esch-sur-Alzette. Just above the town the river is dammed, forming a hydroelectric reservoir that reaches some 10 km up the valley. The dam on the Upper Sauer dates from the 1960s and was built to supply the country with drinking water.

April to October is the season. Autumn colour along the Sure is good. The castle is floodlit after dark.

The village is very small and parking is severely limited. The castle is a ruin with little interpretation. Summer weekends fill the place completely.
