Grutas Park

When Lithuania regained independence, the Soviet monuments came down, and many of them ended up here: Grutas Park, a forest filled with the statues of Lenin, Stalin and local communist figures, set along trails with watchtowers and loudspeakers. Locals nicknamed it Stalin World.

History

After Lithuania restored its independence in 1990, most Soviet statues were taken down, and Malinauskas asked the authorities for them to build a privately financed museum, which he set in the wetlands of Dzūkija National Park; the park and its founder won the Ig Nobel Peace Prize in 2001 (Wikipedia, Grūtas Park).

Any snow-free season; the forest setting is atmospheric in autumn. It is an easy pairing with the spa town of Druskininkai next door.

Things to know

It is intentionally provocative and has been controversial, treating a painful past with a dark, ironic edge that not everyone finds comfortable. The camp-style framing is deliberate. Read it as a reckoning with history rather than a celebration, and it makes sense.
