Muela Hydropower Station

Muela sits at the downstream end of the transfer tunnel from Katse and generates almost all of Lesotho's own electricity on the way, with the machine hall built inside the mountain rather than on the surface, some way underground. The water then continues into South Africa. It is the piece of the highlands water scheme that gives Lesotho something beyond the royalties, and tours run into the underground hall by arrangement.

When to go

September to April is the milder season. Tours must be arranged in advance through the authority. Access can be suspended for maintenance.

Tours must be arranged well in advance and are not always available. Photography inside is restricted. The site is a working power station rather than a visitor attraction.
