Tervete grew from the tall pine forests that inspired the Latvian children's writer Anna Brigadere, and the park leans fully into that: wooden gnomes, a dwarf village, fairy-tale characters and forest playgrounds set among genuinely magnificent old pines. It is the most beloved family walk in the country.

What you actually see

  • The gnome village and fairy-tale forest - dozens of carved wooden figures and cottages along the trails.
  • The old pines - some of the tallest and oldest pines in Latvia, over two centuries old.
  • The wooden castle mound - a reconstructed hillfort recalling the Semigallian past.
  • Winter season - the forest becomes a Latvian Father Christmas world in December.

When to go

Summer for the full trail network and playgrounds; December for the winter fairy season, which is hugely popular with families. Weekdays are calmer than the busy weekends.

Honest expectations

This is designed for children, and adults without them get a lovely pine forest walk plus a lot of wooden gnomes. It is a managed, ticketed park rather than wilderness. The December season books out and gets crowded.

Nearby

Dobele has a ruined castle and a famous lilac collection in spring; the palaces of Zemgale are within easy reach.
