Getting thereAround Alsunga in western Kurzeme; car needed, about two and a half hours from Riga

The Suiti are a small Catholic pocket in the mostly Lutheran region of Kurzeme, around the village of Alsunga, who preserved a distinct culture: an archaic drone singing by the women, bright regional costume, and old wedding and calendar customs. UNESCO lists the Suiti cultural space as intangible heritage in urgent need of safeguarding.

What you actually see

  • The Suiti women singers - the archaic, overlapping drone singing performed at events.
  • Alsunga church and castle - the Catholic parish church and the old Order castle.
  • Traditional costume - the striking bright Suiti dress worn for celebrations.
  • Local customs - wedding and seasonal traditions kept alive by the community.

When to go

Summer, when festivals and singing events are most likely; contact the local cultural centre, since the living culture is best seen at an event rather than an empty village. Otherwise the church and castle are a quiet stop.

Honest expectations

Outside of an organised event you will see a quiet Kurzeme village rather than a performance, so the experience depends on timing and a little arranging. It is remote and thinly served by tourism, which is part of why the tradition survives. Treat the community and its customs with respect.

Nearby

Kuldiga and its wide waterfall are the nearest major sight; the Kurzeme coast lies to the west.
