Pedvale Art Park

Pedvale was founded in 1991 by the sculptor Ojars Feldbergs on the restored Pedvale and Firkspedvale estates above the Abava, and it works differently from a gallery: around a hundred hectares of hill, meadow, woodland and old farm buildings carry works placed in the landscape rather than displayed in rooms, made largely at symposia held on site by Latvian and international artists, with stone, timber and earth the usual materials. Some pieces are permanent, some decay deliberately, and the collection changes. Trails run through the grounds, taking two hours or more to cover, and the restored barns hold indoor exhibitions and accommodation. The Abava valley below is a protected landscape.

When to go

May to September, when the park is fully open and the works are accessible; winter opening is limited. Symposia and events run in summer. Weekdays are quiet.

Honest expectations

Covering the park means walking several kilometres over uneven ground. Some works have deteriorated deliberately or through neglect. Opening is seasonal. Signage identifying works is sparse in places.
