Jaunmoku Palace

Jaunmoku was built in 1901 as a hunting and summer residence for George Armitstead, the mayor of Riga under whom much of the city's art nouveau quarter went up, to a design by Wilhelm Bockslaff in a mixture of neo-Gothic and Jugendstil, red brick with a tower and asymmetrical massing. Inside, the tile stove in one room carries painted panels showing views of Riga around 1900, made for the city's seven hundredth anniversary, which is the object the house is known for. It now holds a museum of forestry and hunting, reflecting the Latvian state forest service that runs it, along with period rooms, a restaurant, a hotel and a park with old trees and a lake.

When to go

May to September for the park and the fullest opening; the house works year round with reduced winter hours. Events and weddings occupy it at weekends. Weekdays are quiet.
