Kyrgyz State History Museum

The State History Museum occupies the monumental building on the north side of Ala-Too Square and reopened in 2021 after an eight-year closure and a restoration that cost a great deal and caused a great deal of argument. Inside, the collection runs from Bronze Age petroglyphs and Saka gold through Silk Road material to ethnographic displays of yurt life, felt-making, saddlery, jewellery and costume, which are the strongest part for most visitors. Soviet-era ceiling murals in the upper hall were kept, and they are a striking survival in themselves. Labelling has improved with the refit and there is more in English than there used to be, though gaps remain. It is the obvious first stop in Bishkek for anyone wanting context before travelling into the mountains.

When to go

Year round; the museum is indoors and works well on a cold or wet day. It closes one day a week, usually Monday, so check before going. Mornings are quietest.

Before you go

English labelling is patchy despite the refit and an audio guide or a guide helps. The building is large and some halls feel underfilled. The restoration remains controversial locally, both for its cost and for what was changed. Photography may carry an extra fee.
