Getting thereIn the far south near the Saudi border; road from Kuwait City, around an hour
EntryFree; resort facilities charged

Al Khiran in Kuwait's far south is built around a set of natural inlets, the khiran, that were dredged and extended into a network of canals with housing, marinas and a resort along them, the largest coastal development in the country. Boats moor at the doors of the chalets. It is where Kuwait City goes for the weekend and the sea here is cleaner than the bay. The inlets themselves are natural features formed by tidal scour, and the dredging extended rather than invented them.

What you actually see

  • The canal network - natural inlets dredged into a system of waterways.
  • The marinas - the moorings the whole development is arranged around.
  • The chalets - the waterside housing with boats at the door.
  • The cleaner sea - water in better condition than in Kuwait Bay.

When to go

November to March is the comfortable season. Weekends and holidays are busiest. Summer heat is extreme.

Honest expectations

It is a residential and resort development rather than a place of interest in itself. Much of it is private and access is limited. Summer heat makes the outdoors impractical.

Nearby

Fahaheel is north, and the Saudi border is south.
