Kakapel National Monument

Kakapel is a rock shelter beneath a granite overhang in western Kenya, and its walls carry paintings in red, white and black: concentric circles, geometric designs, animal and human figures, layered over one another across a long period, with the oldest attributed to hunter-gatherer communities several thousand years ago and later additions by pastoralist and farming peoples. It is one of the very few accessible rock art sites in Kenya. The site was declared a national monument in 2004 and is managed with the local Iteso community, whose elders still associate the shelter with rain-making and other ceremonies. The setting is farmland and granite outcrops, and a short walk leads from the road to the shelter. Guides from the community explain the paintings, their layers and the traditions attached to the place.

What to look for

When to go

Dry seasons for the roads and paths. Morning light suits the shelter. The site is quiet and visits are usually private, arranged with the community guides at the entrance.

Before you go

The paintings are faint in places and some have suffered from weathering and graffiti. The site is small, and the visit is short. Facilities are minimal. Roads in western Kenya are rough away from the main highways.
