Shakpak-Ata

Shakpak-Ata is cut into the face of a chalk cliff above a valley on the peninsula north of Aktau, a mosque hollowed entirely out of the rock on a cruciform plan with four arms around a central space, a mihrab, columns left in the stone and an opening in the roof that lights the interior. Its date is uncertain, with proposals from the tenth to the fourteenth century, which would make it among the earliest of the Mangystau rock mosques. The walls carry carved inscriptions and images of horses and hands added over centuries. A large cemetery of carved stone markers spreads across the slope below. It is one of five components of the Rock Mosques of Mangystau World Heritage property inscribed in 2026.

When to go

April to May and September to October; summer is extremely hot and the tracks are poor after rain. Midday gives the best light through the roof opening. Fridays bring pilgrims.

Good to know

Access is a rough desert track requiring four-wheel drive. It is an active shrine and behaviour and dress should reflect that. There are no facilities, water or shade. Carving damage from visitors is visible on the walls.
