Beket-Ata

Beket-Ata was an eighteenth-century Sufi teacher, astronomer and healer who is said to have cut four mosques into rock during his life, and the one at Oglandy, where he is buried, is the principal pilgrimage site of western Kazakhstan. It is carved into the face of a chalk escarpment above a dry valley, reached by descending a long stairway from the plateau rim, with prayer rooms, cells and the tomb chamber cut into the rock. Pilgrims come in large numbers, many staying overnight in the hostel at the top where food is provided free by tradition, and the customary practice is to visit Shopan-Ata first. It is one of five components of the Rock Mosques of Mangystau World Heritage property inscribed in 2026.

When to go

April to May and September to October; the desert is brutally hot in summer and the tracks difficult in winter. Pilgrim numbers are heaviest at weekends and religious holidays. Many arrive in the evening and pray overnight.

Honest expectations

This is an active pilgrimage site, not a monument; modest dress, removal of shoes and quiet behaviour are expected and photography inside is restricted. Reaching it takes hours of desert driving. The descent and climb back are strenuous. Facilities are pilgrim provision, not tourism.
