Dunn's River Falls, near the resort town of Ocho Rios, is Jamaica's most famous natural attraction, a beautiful and unusual waterfall that tumbles some 180 metres down a series of natural limestone terraces and pools directly onto a Caribbean beach. The island's signature experience is to climb the falls, forming a human chain led by a guide, scrambling up the cool, cascading rock steps through the refreshing water amid lush tropical greenery, a joyful, exhilarating and quintessentially Jamaican adventure.

What you actually see

  • The waterfall climb - the guided ascent of the cascading terraces.
  • The beach - the Caribbean beach at the foot of the falls.
  • The pools - the swimming pools among the cascades.
  • The tropical setting - the lush greenery around the falls.

When to go

November to April, the dry season, for the best weather; go early in the morning to beat the crowds and the cruise-ship day-trippers, who arrive in large numbers by mid-morning. The falls flow year-round, and water shoes, which can be rented, help with the climb.

Honest expectations

It is a hugely popular, commercialised attraction that gets very crowded, especially when cruise ships are in port, with vendors and photographers adding to the bustle, so early arrival is key to enjoying it. The guided climb is fun but slippery, requiring reasonable fitness. Despite the crowds, scrambling up a waterfall onto a beach is a genuinely memorable, uniquely Jamaican thrill.

Nearby

Ocho Rios, its beaches and the Blue Hole at Island Gully are close by.
