Grand-Béréby

Grand-Béréby sits in the far southwest with a bay sheltered enough to swim in, which is rare on this coast, and a run of palm-backed beaches either side of it. The Bay of Sirens, a curve of sand west of the town, is the best known. Olive ridley and leatherback turtles nest on these beaches between roughly October and March, and community conservation projects patrol them and take visitors out at night in season.

When to go

November to March is the dry season and overlaps with the turtle nesting window. The rains from April to July are heavy. Night patrols run in season and must be arranged.

Practical notes

Turtle watching depends on the night and nothing is guaranteed. Outside the sheltered bay the surf and currents are dangerous. Accommodation is limited and books up at Christmas and New Year.
