Trento was ruled by prince-bishops for centuries, and the Castello del Buonconsiglio was their residence: inside the Torre Aquila is the Cycle of the Months, a fresco of about 1400 showing peasant and courtly life through the year in eleven surviving panels, one of the finest secular medieval painting cycles anywhere. The council that met in the city between 1545 and 1563 gives it its place in church history. Facades around Piazza Duomo and along Via Belenzani carry sixteenth-century frescoes. The MUSE science museum, designed by Renzo Piano, opened in 2013 in a former industrial area.

When to go
April to October; the Torre Aquila is visited on limited timed entries and can close. Christmas markets fill the squares in December. Museums close Mondays.

The Torre Aquila frescoes have restricted access with small groups and set times. The castle is large and needs several hours. Some rooms close in rotation.
