Trento

Trento was ruled by prince-bishops for centuries, and the Castello del Buonconsiglio was their residence: inside the Torre Aquila is the Cycle of the Months, a fresco of about 1400 showing peasant and courtly life through the year in eleven surviving panels, one of the finest secular medieval painting cycles anywhere. The council that met in the city between 1545 and 1563 gives it its place in church history. Facades around Piazza Duomo and along Via Belenzani carry sixteenth-century frescoes. The MUSE science museum, designed by Renzo Piano, opened in 2013 in a former industrial area.

Background

The city sits on the Adige River at 194 m. Its Latin name, Tridentum, means Three-tooth place or Trident-town, perhaps from a dedication to Neptune or from the three hills around it, Doss Trento, Doss di San Rocco and Doss di Sant'Agata. A Latin line still visible on the old city hall, attributed to Fra' Bartolomeo da Trento, who died in 1251, says the mountains gave the city silver and its name. The prince-bishops were created in 1027 by Emperor Conrad II. Its 119,359 residents as of 2026 make it the third largest municipality in the Alps. The university dates from 1962, and the city was Alpine Town of the Year 2004.

The Torre Aquila frescoes have restricted access with small groups and set times. The castle is large and needs several hours. Some rooms close in rotation.
