The Nervia is crossed here by a stone bridge of a single arch spanning about thirty-three metres, built in the fifteenth century, with the old quarter and the ruined Doria castle stacked on the slope behind it. Claude Monet came in 1884 and painted the bridge and castle several times, describing the bridge in a letter as a jewel of lightness. The old part of the village, called the Terra, is a warren of covered alleys and steps under the castle. Rossese di Dolceacqua, a red wine from the surrounding terraces, was among the first Ligurian wines to receive a DOC in 1972.
History
Finds from hillforts, the castellari, show early settlement. The counts of Ventimiglia built the first core of the castle in the 12th century, when the village first appears in a document of 1151, and in 1186 the people of Ventimiglia besieged it and set it on fire. The turning point came in 1270, when Oberto Doria bought the castle and its lands from the counts; in 1526 the lords ceded their seigneurial rights over Dolceacqua to Charles II of Savoy, and after 1814 this part of western Liguria passed to the Kingdom of Sardinia. During the War of the Austrian Succession, on 27 July 1744, the castle was partly wrecked and surrendered to Franco-Spanish troops, and it was never rebuilt as a fortress; a violent earthquake in 1887 did further damage to the village (Italian Wikipedia, Dolceacqua).
