Dhoon Glen

Dhoon Glen drops steeply from the coast road to the sea, and the descent passes a waterfall of around forty metres in two stages, the tallest on the island, before reaching a small stony beach at the bottom. The climb back up is the part people remember. The glen is one of the seventeen national glens kept as public ground, wooded and damp, with a ruined mill wheel partway down and steps and handrails on the steeper sections.

When to go

April to October is the best for footing and light. Winter rain makes the steps slippery and the path can close. Spring brings the strongest waterfall flow.

Practical notes

The climb back out is genuinely steep and hard work. Steps and handrails are in variable repair and sections close after storms. The beach at the bottom is stone, not sand.
