Cashtal yn Ard

Cashtal yn Ard, the castle of the height, is a Neolithic chambered cairn on a ridge above the east coast, with a semicircular forecourt of upright stones leading to a passage of five chambers running back some forty metres. It is among the larger monuments of its kind surviving in the region. Excavation found burnt material in the forecourt suggesting fires were lit there. The setting is open field with the sea below and the hills behind.

What you actually see

• The forecourt - the semicircle of standing stones at the eastern end.
• The chambers - five compartments running back along the cairn.
• The scale - a cairn some forty metres long on the ridge.

When to go

April to October is best for the walk in. The site is open at all times. Grass grows long around the stones in summer.

Honest expectations

The cairn material is largely gone and the structure reads as stones in a field. There is little interpretation on site. Access is across farmland and can be muddy.
