Nephin

Nephin rises to 806 metres from flat bog and farmland with no other high ground attached to it, which makes it the highest free-standing mountain in Ireland and visible from an enormous distance across Mayo. It is a quartzite dome, steep on all sides, with scree and boulder ground on the upper slopes. The common route from Lettera on the south-western flank is short in distance and relentless in gradient - about four kilometres up with no zigzags and no constructed path, gaining most of the height in one push. There are no waymarks. From the summit the view takes in Clew Bay, Achill, the Nephin Beg range, Lough Conn directly below and, on the clearest days, ground in several counties. The mountain catches weather from every direction and the summit dome is featureless in cloud, which makes descending on the correct side a real navigational problem.

When to go

May to September. Cloud covers the top frequently and the featureless dome makes navigation off it genuinely difficult - carry map and compass and know how to use them.

Honest expectations

No path, no waymarks and a relentless gradient; short in distance but hard. Descending in cloud on the wrong bearing puts you a long way from your car. No shelter or water on the mountain.
