James Joyce Centre

The centre occupies a 1784 townhouse on North Great George's Street, saved from demolition and restored in the 1990s largely through the efforts of David Norris, the Joyce scholar and senator who lives on the same street. Joyce did not live in this house, but a dancing master named Denis Maginni who taught in it appears by name in Ulysses, which is the connection. Its most-photographed object is the front door of 7 Eccles Street - the fictional home of Leopold and Molly Bloom - rescued when that house was demolished in 1967 and now standing in the centre. There are exhibitions on Joyce's Dublin, his family and the books, a restored Georgian interior, and a programme of walking tours through the north inner city that are the more useful part for most visitors. The centre is a hub for Bloomsday and is at its busiest and best in mid-June.

When to go

Any season; indoors. Bloomsday in mid-June is when the centre is at full stretch, and events book out. Walking tours run to a schedule that varies by season.

Honest expectations

Joyce never lived here - the connection is oblique. It is small; an hour covers the house. Walking tours are a separate charge and are what many visitors get most from. Reduced winter hours.
