Glencolmcille Folk Village

Father James McDyer came to Glencolmcille in 1951 and found a Gaeltacht parish emptying through emigration with no electricity, no water scheme and no work. He set about building co-operatives - a vegetable processing plant, a knitwear operation, a holiday village - as a way of keeping people in the glen, and the folk village, opened in 1967, was part of that: built by local labour as a working income source rather than as heritage for its own sake. The cottages are replicas rather than originals, each furnished to a different period - 1720s, 1820s, 1920s - showing how a Donegal household changed, with a schoolhouse, a shebeen selling local wines and preserves, and a craft shop. That origin gives it a different character from a museum assembled by professionals, and the co-operative movement it came from is part of the interpretation. It is seasonal and volunteer-influenced.
