The craft village was established in the 1980s as a group of independent workshops sharing a site, and it has kept that model: each unit is a working studio with a maker in it, not a shop selling imported goods with an Irish label. The range shifts as makers come and go, but it has consistently included ceramics, batik and textile work, jewellery, ironwork, glass and hand-weaving, and the makers are usually at their benches during opening hours - you can watch, ask and buy directly. That is the difference from a souvenir shop and the reason it is worth the two-kilometre detour from Donegal town. There is a cafe on site. Studios keep their own hours, and several close or reduce opening in winter, so a visit out of season can mean finding half of them shut. It is small - a couple of hours at most, and less if you are not buying.

What you actually see

  • The working studios - makers at their benches during opening hours.
  • The range - ceramics, textiles, jewellery, ironwork, glass and weaving.
  • The direct sale - buying from the person who made the piece.
  • The independence - separate businesses sharing a site, not a single retailer.

When to go

April to October, when all the studios are open. Several close or reduce hours in winter. Weekdays are when makers are most likely to be working.

Honest expectations

Studios set their own hours and some close in winter - a quiet-season visit may find several shut. It is small; two hours at most. Prices are studio prices, not souvenir prices.

Nearby

Donegal town and its castle are two kilometres north; Ardara and the tweed country are west.
