Pasemah Megaliths

The Pasemah plateau below Mount Dempo holds one of the more striking megalithic traditions in Southeast Asia: boulders carved into human and animal figures, most famously men in helmets and armlets riding or grappling with buffalo and elephants, and figures wrestling snakes, worked in a heavy rounded style with the shape of the original boulder still evident. There are also stone chambers with painted interiors, mortars, troughs and standing stones. Dating is unsettled - estimates have ranged widely, commonly placed in the last centuries BCE or the early centuries CE - and who made them is not known, since no continuity connects them to the present population. The carvings stand in coffee gardens and paddy across the district, and seeing several means a vehicle and local directions.

What to expect

Sites are scattered across farmland with minimal signage - a local guide is effectively necessary. Some carvings are weathered. There is almost no interpretation and few facilities.
