Muaro Jambi
The largest ancient temple site in Sumatra, red-brick Buddhist structures spread through orchards and forest along the Batanghari river.

Muaro Jambi covers a long stretch of low ground beside the Batanghari, and it is the biggest ancient temple complex in Sumatra by a wide margin. The structures are red brick rather than the volcanic stone of Java: low platforms, stairways and walled enclosures, most of them Buddhist, raised during the centuries when this river was a trade and learning route. Only part of the site has been cleared and consolidated, and the rest lies under earth mounds among durian trees and rubber. Candi Gumpung and Candi Tinggi are the main excavated groups, linked by shaded lanes and old canal lines that most visitors ride between on hired bicycles rather than walk.
What you actually see
- Candi Gumpung and Candi Tinggi - the two main cleared brick complexes with their platforms and stairs.
- The unexcavated mounds - grassed humps in the orchards marking unopened structures.
- The canal lines - old waterways cut between the temples and the river.
- The bicycle lanes - shaded tracks through durian and rubber that link the groups.
When to go
The drier months, roughly May to September, keep the lanes rideable; in the wet season parts flood and the ground turns to mud. Mornings are cooler and the light through the trees is better. Weekends bring local families, while on a weekday you may share the site with almost nobody.
Honest expectations
The brick structures stand only a metre or two high and much of what you see is reconstruction, so this is a site to walk and imagine rather than a set of standing monuments. Signage is limited and English-speaking guides are not always available. Haze from land fires can hang over the area in some dry seasons. Getting here from Jambi means a taxi or ride-hail out and back.
Nearby
Jambi city and the Batanghari waterfront are half an hour west.
