Plengkung, known to surfers as G-Land after Grajagan bay, is a left-hand reef point on the south-eastern corner of Java inside Alas Purwo national park, and it is among the most serious waves in Indonesia - long, fast and hollow, breaking over shallow reef in sections named Kongs, Money Trees and Speed Reef, with rides that run for hundreds of metres when it is working. It was found by surfers in the early 1970s and the first camp followed; the camps remain the only accommodation, since the wave is inside a national park with no village. Access is by boat across from Bali or Grajagan, or a long rough track through the park. A 1994 tsunami struck this coast and destroyed the camps, which were rebuilt. Malaria is present.

What you actually see

  • A long hollow left - sections running for hundreds of metres over shallow reef.
  • Camps inside a national park - the only accommodation, no village on the coast.
  • Boat or track access - across from Bali, or the rough route through Alas Purwo.
  • Named sections - Kongs, Money Trees and Speed Reef along the point.

When to go

April to October, the swell season. A week.

Honest expectations

It breaks over shallow sharp reef and is not an intermediate wave. Camps are package-priced and there is no alternative. Malaria is present. The park track is rough and the boat crossing is exposed.

Nearby

Alas Purwo's savanna and caves are inland; Banyuwangi and the Bali ferry are north.
