Mulagljufur

Mulagljufur is a canyon running back towards the ice from the coastal plain, its walls green with moss and cut by side streams, and at its head the fall called Hangandifoss comes over from a great height - well above a hundred metres, in a thin ribbon. It stayed almost unvisited for years because the turning off the ring road is gravel and unmarked, and the walk in follows sheep tracks rather than a made path. That is changing as it spreads online, but it is still a place where an hour's walk buys solitude in a stretch of coast otherwise dense with coaches. The path runs along the rim, with the drop always on one side.

What you actually see

• A mossed canyon inland - side streams cutting the green walls.
• Hangandifoss at the head - a thin ribbon falling well over a hundred metres.
• Sheep tracks, not a path - the route in is unmade.
• Solitude on a busy coast - an hour's walk from the ring road.

When to go

June to September; wet and slippery outside that. Three to four hours.

Honest expectations

The track off route 1 is rough and hard to spot, and low cars struggle. The walk is boggy and the rim is unfenced with long drops. Cloud sits in the canyon often and hides the fall entirely. No facilities of any kind.
