Haifoss

Haifoss drops about 122 metres off the plateau into a gorge on the Fossa, a tributary of the Thjorsa, and a second fall called Granni comes over the rim a short distance along the same wall, so the two are seen together from the viewpoint. It was long described as Iceland's second highest waterfall; that ranking has shifted as taller drops were surveyed, notably Morsarfoss at the edge of Vatnajokull measured after 2007, and the honest description now is that it is among the highest rather than second. The gorge below is steep sided and green in summer. The road in is the reason many people skip it.

When to go

June to September; road 332 is closed by snow much of the year. Half a day.

Good to know

Road 332 is rough gravel that shakes small cars badly and is often washboarded. The viewpoint is an unfenced cliff edge with a long drop and people take real risks on it. Wind at the rim is severe. No facilities.
